• As per the Global Burden of Disease Study, 2010, oral diseases affect 3.9 billion people worldwide.
• The World Dental Federation estimates that 7 out of 10 Indian children have untreated dental cavities and tooth decay.
• According to the National Oral Health Survey of India (2002-03), in the age range of 65-74 years, 19% in India is toothless.

The level of Oral Healthcare in India leaves a lot to be desired. Here are the primary reasons for these gaps:

• Oral health is not taken seriously in India. Dental hygiene and problems are assumed secondary to general health issues, and are not given attention and importance.
• To many across India, there is no access to dental practitioners, geographical distance being the primary culprit.
• Affordability becomes a consideration, as expenditure towards dental issues takes a backseat compared to the general health needs of self and family.
